The Safe and Drug-Free Schools Consortium provides programs and resources to parents and caregivers, school staff and students, community organizations, churches, and businesses. A number of Parent Programs are facilitated by trained Parent Educators who are often parents themselves. Parents who participate in these programs benefit by acquiring positive parenting tips, parent support, a parent network and become more involved in their child’s education. Infused into all parent programs is information on Alcohol, Tobacco and Other Drugs (ATOD), and (Violence Prevention).

Parents are concerned about the issue of bullying - that their children not be the victims of bullying and teasing, or that their children not be the perpetrator.  MCESA/Parent Resources has numerous tips for parents.  Contact 989-631-5892, ext. 131 or tcoty@mcesa.k12.mi.us.  The Canadian-based organization No More Bullies offers a child-friendly Web site that explains bullying in uncomplicated terms and suggests ways to confront it.  The site also presents a list of books that teachers and parents can use to discuss bullying with young students. www.nomorebullies.com

Children whose Parents are Partners...In Education, do better in school. Years of research indicate that parents who are involved with their children's formal education become successful learners and problem-solvers. The Parent Resources Office at the Midland County ESA encourages families to stay connected and stay involved with their local schools. At Parent Talks and other Parent Workshops at area schools, family centers and work-sites, parents meet with a trained Parent Educator and discuss many topics that encourage parents to communicate effectively with their children, the schools and with each other. Read Parent Tips on this page to learn more about how parents can get and stay involved in their children's education. Or visit this site http://www.urbanext.uiuc.edu/succeed/ for additional information on Helping Children Succeed in School.
